Why is this study being conducted?

This study will compare two brief online programs designed to reduce alcohol consumption and related harms. We want to see whether one program is better than the other in reducing alcohol consumption, cognitive decline and alcohol-related harms, and in improving quality of life among older adults.

What will happen if I decide to participate?

If you decide to participate, you will be randomly assigned to receive one of two brief online programs for problematic alcohol use, both of which will provide you with a greater knowledge and understanding of alcohol consumption and related harms.

You will be actively enrolled in the study for a period of 4-weeks. During this time, you will be free to progress through the program at your own pace. You will also be asked to complete a number of online assessments:

  • at the start of the study

  • at 4-weeks (after you have completed the online program)

  • at 12-months.

Assessments will focus on alcohol use, thinking and memory abilities, alcohol-related harms and quality of life. Each round of assessments will take approximately 1 hour. All aspects of the study will be completed online, from your own home and your own computer.

After you have completed each assessment, you will receive a $20 Prezzee voucher.

Before starting

Prior to enrolment, our research team needs to make sure that you are eligible for the study. You will be asked to complete an online eligibility screening, which takes about 10 minutes. This will include questions about your alcohol use, medical history, and current psychological status.
